We are very proud to make our community aware of a recent and positive development at Wahconah. As many of you know, our school is in its third year of taking part in the Unified Athletics program that is co-sponsored by Massachusetts Special Olympics and the MIAA (Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association). The core of this program is centered on using sports as a catalyst to create a more inclusive environment for all. This approach pairs students with and without disabilities on the same varsity athletic team in a competitive setting.

Earlier this fall, Wahconah was one of 16 schools in Massachusetts and one of 173 in the nation to be awarded the ESPN/Special Olympics “National Banner” status as a National Unified Champion School. This has absolutely nothing to do with wins and losses and is only partly due to our Unified Athletic program. In order to achieve this status, we must meet certain criteria that as an entire school community. Last Friday, Mass. Special Olympics Unified Manager Kathy Lutz came to Wahconah to present the National Banner to the entire school at a pep rally. The following is a link to a story recently written about that event: https://www.iberkshires.com/story/61030/Wahconah-Unveils-Banner-Marking-National-Unified-Sports-Honor.html

We are extremely proud of this status and are genuinely hopeful we can inspire other schools in the Berkshires and even Western Mass. to join what the Special Olympics calls the “Unified Generation”.
